This tour will take you to Wae Rebo Village, a remote traditional village in the highlands of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Day 1. Labuan Bajo – Denge – Wae Rebo Village
- Drive to Denge will spend time 4 – 5 hours
- Early morning at 6 Am a guide and driver will pick you up at the hotel in Labuan Bajo
- Depart for Denge Village, the place where the starting point of the trek to Wae Rebo Village
- Enjoy the scenic drive through Flores’ rural countryside, passing by lush hills, rice fields, and traditional villages
- Arrive at Denge Village: This is the starting point for the hike to Wae Rebo Village
- Lunch at a local restaurant at Dintor Village.
- In the Afternoon around 3 Pm
- Trekking to Wae Rebo Village will spend time around 2-3 hours
- Begin your hike through a beautiful forest trail. The trek is moderately challenging, but the views are stunning, with lush vegetation, and beautiful mountain landscapes. Along the way, you’ll also see coffee plantations, bamboo forests, and traditional farming activities.
- The guide will explain the local flora and fauna, as well as the history and culture of the area
- Arrive at Wae Rebo Village
- This unique village is famous for its traditional Mbaru Niang houses, which are cone-shaped and made of bamboo, thatch, and other natural materials. These houses have been preserved for generations and are symbols of the local cultural heritage
- Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by the villagers in a traditional ceremony. The village chief or elders will perform a welcome ritual, giving you a chance to experience local customs and hospitality
- You’ll stay in one of the Mbaru Niang houses—the traditional conical houses made of bamboo and thatch. These houses have been passed down through generations and are still used by local families.
- Exploring Wae Rebo Village
- After settling in, you’ll be invited to explore the village, meet the locals, and learn about the Manggarai culture
- You will have the chance to see how the villagers live, with a focus on traditional crafts, farming, and daily rituals
- You may also observe or participate in activities such as weaving, coffee grinding, or agriculture
- Traditional Dinner
- You will enjoy a traditional Manggarai meal prepared by the villagers, made with local ingredients like cassava, sweet potatoes, vegetables, and rice.
- This is a perfect opportunity to learn about the local cuisine and experience the simplicity and authenticity of Flores’ food culture.
- Before sleeping
- Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Wae Rebo, which is located high up in the mountains with minimal light pollution
- Overnight stay in a traditional Mbaru Niang house—sleeping in this unique structure provides an authentic experience of the Manggarai people’s way of life.
Day 2: Wae Rebo – Dintor – Labuan Bajo
- In the Morning
- Wake up early to catch a beautiful sunrise over the surrounding mountains. The view of the mist covering the village in the morning light is breathtaking.
- Take a morning walk around Wae Rebo to interact more with the villagers and explore their traditional way of life. Learn about their farming techniques, especially their coffee cultivation, which is a significant part of their livelihood.
- After waking up in the traditional house, you’ll be served a simple breakfast consisting of local fruits, cassava, rice, and coffee made from beans grown in the region
- Return Trek to Denge Village
- After having breakfast, begin your descent back to Denge Village. The return trek is easier and shorter but still offers amazing views of the surrounding landscape
- Upon arrival in Denge Village you will drive to Dintor for having lunch before departing
- Begin your journey back to Labuan Bajo by car, passing through beautiful landscapes once more
- On arrival in Labuan Bajo, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel in Labuan Bajo
